Following the tradition of British Fine Art, Julie Hammonds' reputation as a landscape artist in oils has been built over the last twenty-five years painting in South Devon.
Self taught, her early work quickly developed a distinctive style reflecting her love of the countryside. In particular the changing light, mood and tonal harmonies of the seasons, suffused her paintings with a contemplative quality, which has become an enduring theme.
From her studio in Newton Ferrers, the soft folds of South Devon's landscape with its rolling hills, inlets, creek and rustic villages, offered a rich seam of inspiration. Her work became a commercial success following a one-person exhibition which led to commissions being taken from as far afield as America, New Zealand and Australia. The scale of her canvases had now become larger, with commissions for hotels and boardrooms complimenting those for more domestic settings.
A change in direction, combined with a move to a new studio overlooking Plymouth Sound, led to involvement with boats and the sea. Recent works have reflected this interest and Marine Art now features as a strong part of Julie's portfolio.
Universal themes such as the power of nature and the passage of time are explored in Julie's landscapes, portraiture and marine paintings. The beauty of the English Countryside is an integral part of our communal consciousness, and capturing and interpreting this 'Englishness' on canvas is her abiding passion.
